I agree, and so is Myopic Empire (sp) The breakdowns in it are funny. Not in a disrespectuful way though. Tom is a legend. My boyfriend and I just find breakdowns to be really hilarious.

I am ashamed to admit that I think that V. Santura's contributions to 'Eparistera Daimones' are the best songs on the album...

Wilmar...

"In Shrouds Decayed" is so incredibly..awesome!!! Waaayyy beyond belief! Infact, at "one" point, devine, dare I say that!

That "one" point was at about 2:30 into the song when I heard music in a form of a tragic-poem. There-soon after...V. played the most significant "riff" of his life, imho, which was a metaphor to the likes of "Only Theatre of Pain"!!!

God Bless "em!

It's true. Listen to that song Myopic Empire. If you can't hear the breakdowns in it you are deaf.

Yes that stuff is trendy but they sound Good when done right. Napalm Deaths song Life and Limb on Time Waits for No Slave has one and it sounds great.

When Deathcore bands do it, it is really annoying and crappy

I think the young'uns have a different definition of "breakdown" than the one that we use. There is a discussion thread over at the metal archives about this very thing. I jumped in when someone said something about a breakdown in "Angel of Death." It took me a minute to figure out what passage they were talking about...

Breakdown is a newer term used in metal, so I suppose we do have a different definition of it.

It would be interesting to know when the term was first coined; but I have always thought of it as being as simple as the word conjunction: It centres around the guitarist & riff oriented rock or metal. Throughout the course of a tune, a guitarist who works this way can base an entire structure of riffs in a song off of flats, such as B for Monotheist. The song may have two, or three chord changes; but they are augmented in such a way so that a "breakdown" to their root can be used in perfect equilibrium with drum &+bass.

I am actually not sure who started that term. it would be cool to look up I suppose.

Isn't it just the wrong use of the term 'break'? Indeed 'Myopic Empire' knows a few breaks, just like 'Descendant', 'In Shrouds Decayed', 'Goetia', need I say more?

I also think it is basically just a variation of "break", this breakdown thing is just one form of break/tempo change.
