I got into this exact discussion over at the Metal Archives and finally gave up. The kids these days have expanded the use of the term to any downtempo passage, regardless of the number of instruments playing or the presence of melody. My "contribution" starts on the second page.
I'll admit, I got a little cranky. _________________ I am Lazarus, risen from my tomb.

I had specifically looked at Wikipedia page before I entered into the discussion. I didn't specifically reference it, because I don't hear a breadkown in "Darkness Descends."
PS. For some reason, I can't link to it. But the page is titled "Break (music)" and there is a specific page on Metal. _________________ I am Lazarus, risen from my tomb.

What they're calling a breakdown these days is in 80s parlance what was known as the mosh parts of a song, the slower part of Angel of Death being a classic example, its just a matter of terminologies moving with time. Darkness Descends actually has the breakdown at the start of the song so its a pretty useless example, dunno why that was suggested.
Its generally accepted that a musical breakdown specifically refers to the segment of a song or track that has the rhythm section, bass and other elements removed to create tension and a rest for the listener, there are several examples of this technique on ED. |

Hm... I fear the breakdown controversy might also involve one certain Suffocation riff in "Liege of Inveracity" which was picked up and copied by countless Slam Death bands, a reduced, slow chug - chug riff following a faster part.
People who know the song might know what I mean, bands like Soils of Fate and Devourment etc pp. |

It's my first introduction to the term, again something learned is something gained. So the breakdown in 'Myopic Empire' is the part where the piano kicks in with the parlando female vocal. Shall we now discuss the counterpoint? _________________ Nitimur in vetitum semper cupimusque negata |

Well, Knuck was discussing breakdown with Dr Shark on the Metal Archives and it came down to that it doesn't matter how you define breakdown. In that case it's in the same realm with UFO's, crop circles and Derek Ogilvie for me. If you can't define it, it doesn't exist. Very Kantian, I know, but that makes life simple for me
It seems to be a term coming from the disco-scene. Let it stay there. We call it breaks and intermezzo's. Done talking. _________________ Nitimur in vetitum semper cupimusque negata |

Next wednesday I will conduct an interview with V. Santura, and I will ask a few questions about his contributions and how he reviews them in accordance to the rest of the album. _________________ Nitimur in vetitum semper cupimusque negata |
